Our home orchard

The Séhédic home orchard in South Brittany

We truly treasure our 20-acre orchard. Located in the county of La Forêt-Fouesnant, in south Brittany, we spend hours in it caring for our soil and trees.

Our orchard is completely organic (certified by Ecocert) : zero chemical fertilizers are applied to the soil. The apple trees are nourished with “Bordelaise mash” and natural compost made out of the grass growing at the feet of the trees that we cut regularly in order to offer the apples, when mature, to fall on a nice and cosy “grass mattress”.

We visit the orchard often, and see the result of our work : the soil is alive, the fauna is flourishing.

Our home orchard in South Bittany : a unique terroir

Our orchard is spread on 20 acres, 17 acres in the town of La Forêt-Fouesnant and 3 acres in the neighboring town of Saint-Evarzec. 4 km away from the seacoast, our main orchard is on the hilly outskirts of the town and has a great south / south-west exposure, and natural protection against prevailing winds. The soil is made of schistous rock and relatively shallow ground.

Our orchard has the great advantage of being humid enough without retaining excessive amounts of water, which are very important qualities for cider apples to stay happy, healthy and flavory.

A large variety of cider apples

Our apple trees are composed for one third of them of standard trees and the rest are half standard trees. Our 9000 trees are all at different stages of their lives, from young recently planted to 70 year old trees : the diversity of these age groups is also an important part of the wealth of our orchard.

We have over the years carefully selected over more than 30 varieties of cider apples, this diversity is a key success factor for producing such authentic, elegant and flavorsome ciders. These apple cider varieties are sweet, bittersweet, bitter and acidic apples. They all have amazing names, many of them coming from the traditional Breton language : C'huero briz, Maire Menard, Peau de chien, Jeanne Renard, Kermerrien, C'huero braw, Dous moen, Prat yeod, Jurella, Avrolles, Douce Coet, Guillevic, C'huero ru perlay, Trojen hir, Jobic, Kerchen, C'huero braw, C'huero ru, C'hureo gwen, C'hureo stang, Prat yeod, Dous moen, Belein…

By the way, did you know that "Séhédic" means "Little thirst" in the Breton language!

Our home orchard reflects our deep respect for traditions and authenticity. Year on year, our orchard yields amazing quality apples. Our know-how together with each year’s harvest enables us to produce every year the finest premium quality ciders.
